March 11 2011

Hello everyone,
I hope you are having a good year so far.  The music department is very busy now with Drumline, Colorguard, Jazz Band, and Symphonic Band preparing for their festivals and competitions.  CMEA for Jazz band is next Thursday March 17th at Hanford High School.  The Symphonic Band's CMEA festival is April 5th at Washington Union High School.
Preparations are being made for next fall.  I have chosen a great show that will set up the band for great success.  I have put a few dates on the calendar for the fall including Band Camp, a few summer rehearals, Tuesday and Thursday rehearsals, and Saturday rehearsals.  Next year WBA Championships will be down south somewhere so that will be our overnight trip for the fall.  I encourage you to use all available fundraisers to prepare for that.  We have our annual All About You drum and colorguard show April 15th where we will be raffling off an iPAD.  Tickets are only two dollars and for every ticket your student sells they get $1.50 towards their need so I encourage you to sell those tickets!!
This is a short post today.  Have a great weekend!!

Hello Again..

Sorry it's been awhile since my last post, life has been busy around the Morris household!  We found out a couple of weeks ago that we are expecting another baby!  That makes four for those of you that are counting.  We are very excited, and tired already!
Second semester is not quite as busy as marching season for the band, but it is time for our smaller groups to shine.  This semester is Jazz, Drumline, and Colorguard season and they are working very hard to refine their shows to perfection.  As of today the Jazz band has attended one jazz festival and we received some great comments form the judges.  Drumline and Colorguard have also attended their first competition and placed 5th and 7th respectively.  There is still so much to do and the staff and students are working very hard to make sure that our their goals are achieved.

Winding Down Fall Semester

Hello again parents!  As we wind down this semester I would like to again take a second and reflect back on a successful and fun Marching Band Season.  I want to commend and thank you all for your hard work and dedication to your child's musical success.
Next Thursday is our last day of school before Christmas break and I believe the kids are definitely looking forward to some real time off.  Before they turn their brains off for three weeks we will be having our Christmas Concert Thursday night at 6:30 at Tulare Union Auditorium.  The dress code for the night is all black and a Christmas tie for the boys if they have one. Please make sure the boys wear long black socks!!
Over the break I am assigning a four hour practice sheet for symphonic band players and Jazz Band members.  This sheet will not be required for drumline or colorguard members since they will be practicing through the break.  Please encourage your child to complete this assignment so that they get a jump start on symphonic season.
I am also asking for the symphonic band students to bring a 1 inch 3 ring binder, preferably black to school to store their music in.  I will provide clear slip covers to put the music in.  This will help them stay organized and prepared for class.  I will be doing binder checks periodically throughout second semester to make sure they are keeping them up. I know some people might not have access to a binder, we will take care of those students as needed and make sure they are successful.
Thanks for your time, email me if you have any questions or concerns.  Have a great Holiday!

Championships

I cannot tell you how disappointed I was when the sun came out on Saturday.  Saturday morning the decision was made to not participate in WBA Championships due to the likelihood of rain.  This was a very difficult decision to make and was not made in a rush.  After careful consideration for student safety and well being, equipment safety and transportation I decided to hold off.  It is easy to disagree with my decision now that we all know that the rain subsided and our time slot had fine weather, but please know that the best interest of all was taken into account.  I have spoken with many of the students and I understand their disppointment and yours.  If they were not disappointed I would be shocked.  Each of you have a very dedicated, talented, and passionate performer that was unable to do what they do best.  I will look back on this weekend with great disappointment, but I will look back with pride at all of the achievements we had throughout the season.  Thank you for all of your past and continued support of the TWHS Band and Colorguard.

Here we go!!!

Sorry I missed my blog last week. I appreciate all of your help and support during the last few weeks with the showcase, football games, Saturday practice, and Fatima parade.  Whew, it makes me tired just remembering all of the things we have done the past few weeks.
The showcase was a big success!  I was very impressed with the size of the crowd, it was substantially bigger than last year, and each school's boosters were rewarded with roughly $700 for their general funds.  A special thanks to Vivian Hamilton for the ticket printing, her husband Mike did a great job with the air grams! I would also like to recognize Wendy Albright for all of her great work with ticket check out and record keeping, way to go!  It was a pleasure to watch our kids along with all of the other schools represent Tulare's music scene with pride!

Please make sure that you have turned in your student's uniform to Betty Brite's by today so that it can get cleaned.  The boosters are paying for the cleaning, all you need to do is drop it off and pick it up.

We have a busy week this week and weekend.

As you may or may not know this week's game is Homecoming, so along with our usual pregame activities we have all of the other groups in the pre-game parade as well, so call time will be 5:30.  If you can help by driving trucks to and from the stadium please email me or call me to make sure you are properly documented with the district.  Our homecoming nominees, Isaac Castillo and Ashley Gonzalez, made into the top ten so they will be representing our organization in a golf cart in the parade and on the homecoming court.  We will decorate the golf cart with an Elvis theme (Las Vegas is the homecoming theme).  If you would like to help with that I would appreciate the assistance.

Saturday morning you need to have your child at TWHS at 6:00 a.m. for the Visalia Band Review.  I have posted the schedule for the day on the website along with the new parade route.  If you plan on coming to watch please review the parade route as it is different this year than years past.  Our parade step off is 9:05 and our field time is 12:45.

I desperately need drivers for this event!!!!!!!!!!!

After Visalia awards we will pack and depart for Clovis High School for the Golden State Tournament of Bands.  Our Field time there is 8:12.  We will be feeding the kids twice Saturday, once at Visalia and once in Clovis.  If you would like to send them with money they will have brief access to the snack bar in Visalia.

That's the rundown for this weekend, again I am tired just thinking about it!  We really need all of your help to make this all run smoothly.

Just a word of thought, please remember that we are here for the kids to help make this a positive experience for them.  I know with the long hours you and your kids put in that tension can build between people, myself included, please keep a positive atmosphere around the band.  If you have thoughts or concerns please feel free to come and talk to me, I always have time for you and your students.

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN FOR ALL OF YOUR HARD WORK AND SUPPORT!!!!  This band is truly blessed to have a wonderful support group in all of you.

Sincerely,
Dave Morris

Band News

Dear parents I am creating this blog to help keep everyone a little better informed.  I will be making weekly entries, telling you about upcoming events and needs the band has and thoughts on what has been going on.  I appreciate your help and all that you do for the band!  This weekend we have practice this Saturday 10/20/10  that will go from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.  Your child will need to provide his/her own lunch, the boosters will provide them with a couple of snacks throughout the day and a nice dinner.  The next day is the TDES Fatima parade, report time for that is 9:00 next to the TDES hall.  Pleases encourage your child to practice their music and come to practice on time and with a good attitude.  Thanks again!
